Suggest Treatment For Post Nasal Drip In An Elderly Person
I am 85 years old and have a small problem. I ve had a post-nasal drip often in my life, but it is annoying me more now. I don t have a cold, haven t had one in a couple of years. My problem is that a yellowish mucus builds up in the nasal cavities of my nose and I often have to spit it out, or swallow it if I don t have a kleenex. It never comes out my nose, just goes into my throat.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Laryngopharyngeal reflux and allergy can be the reason of giving post nasal drip. I would suggest taking proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole ( Nexium ) and anti histamines like cetrizine to clear it. Avoid excess spicy, fried and fatty foods. Carbonated drinks, coffee and alcohol should be avoided. Make your dinner early at least 2 hours before bed time. Raise your head end more with adequate extra pillows. Taking ginger tea, chamomile tea and honey is good also. If not improving then a consultation with ENT specialist is well appreciated.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
