Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 39 year old daughter had a baby three weeks ago. She lives in Arlington, VA & I live in California. I was there for the birth and the first 16 days after the baby s birth. Her sister is there but planning to fly home to CA on Tues. Her mother-in-law lives across the hall and is available for support. I believe she has postpartum depression. I have suggested she call her OB GYN tomorrow. Will they have her make an appointment with a counselor? or can she take RX if she is breastfeeding?
Some normal changes after pregnancy can cause symptoms similar to those of depres¬sion. But if you have any of the follow¬ing symptoms of depression for more than 2 weeks, contact your doctor: feeling sad, hopeless, and over¬whelmed, crying a lot, having no energy or motivation, eating too little or too much, loss of sleep, memory loss, and losing interest in pleasurable activities etc. Treatment for postpartum depression can challenge a mother's ability to breast-feed and some medications used to treat postpartum depression are not recommended for women who are breast-feeding. Although medicines are effective in treatment of post-partum depression, but counseling and family support is very important. First give her mental and emotional support. If she is not getting out of it then consult a good psychiatrist of your local area. He/she might give you perfect choice of medicine. Good luck!!
