Suggest Treatment For Problem With Defecation After Appendicitis Treatment

Hi, my name is Ben and I m very grateful for your time. I m 24, and around a year ago I had appendicitus.. or however ya spell it. I got the surgery at the hospital and all was well for a week or so. After that though, it s been nothing but a damn nightmare. I have problems pooping. Like it never wants to come out. I went to a doctor relevant to this problem and we did blood work and a colonoscopy. He said he didn t find anything but he thinks its scar tissue from the surgery. so he told me to take Miralax everyday, whcih I do. Problem was resolved for a bit but it s easy to forget to take ya know. I m getting back on track now but it s a living hell dealing with it. I m not trying to be overdramatic but it s very inconvenient. Well my question is should I just take Miralax every day for the rest of my live? Should I ask for surgery? I m so aggravated I thought this was a routiene surgery. Everyone else that has had it does not have this problem. It makes me stuck in the bathroom forever just pouring puddles of sweat. Help please!

Hi,

Constipation is a common issue following surgery, including appendectomy. Here are some general treatment suggestions to help alleviate constipation after an appendectomy surgery:
* Stay hydrated: Consume different kinds of fluids, particularly water, all through the day. Sufficient hydration can help soften the stool and make it easier to pass.
* Increase fiber intake: Consume foods rich in dietary fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fiber helps with regular bowel movements and adds bulk to stool. However, be mindful to increase fiber gradually to avoid excessive gas or bloating.
* Gentle exercise: Engage in light physical activity, such as walking, as it can stimulate bowel movements and promote regularity.
* Over-the-counter laxatives: Consider using over-the-counter laxatives only under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Options include bulk-forming laxatives (e.g., psyllium), osmotic laxatives (e.g., polyethylene glycol), or stool softeners (e.g., docusate sodium).
* Avoid constipation triggers: Limit the intake of foods that can contribute to constipation, such as processed foods, dairy products, and foods low in fiber. Also, try to avoid or minimize the use of medications known to cause constipation, if possible.
* Establish a regular bathroom routine: Create a habit of visiting the bathroom at the same time each day, preferably after meals, to encourage regular bowel movements.

If your constipation persists or becomes severe, consult with your healthcare provider.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
