Suggest Treatment For Prolonged Diarrhea In An Infant Post Antibiotic Intake
my son is 3mo old.(around14lbs)he has had approximately 12 diarrhea diapers in the past 20hours (taking in maybe 20 oz of formula in this time). His diarrhea is watery, yellow, & smells fishy. he is on day 5 of an antibiotic (amoxicillin), but i too now have the same type diarrhea. Do we need to see our pediatrician or let this run its course? (scared of dehydation)
Yes you should take advice from your paediatrician. Diarrhoea is dangerous by causing dehydration. Also it is difficult to treat. Maintenance of hydration is must. Amoxicillin may also cause diarrhoea by killing friendly bacterias of our intestine, although very less than Ampicillin. So revision of drug use is needed here. You have not provided the result of stool test, which should be done here. Diarrhoea may be caused by some protozoa and virus which needs other drugs. Also use of Probiotics like Lactobacilli is usefull.
