Suggest Treatment For Prolonged Diarrhea With Blood And Mucus In Stools Of A Teenager
My 13 year old granddaughter has started having extreme diarrhea with blood and mucous. Sometimes she vomits and complains of her stomach hurting. She is a special needs child and does not have a diagnosis. She has been tested for every syndrome that the doctor thought it might be. The only test that showed a 5 to 7% of Angelman s Syndrome. She has been taking private Speech, Occupational and Physical therapies since she was about 2 years old. When she eats, her stomach protrudes and looks like she is about 4 or 5 months pregnant. My son and daughter-in-law have taken her to the ER two times with this diarrhea situation. The first time the doctors said they did not find anything and said it must be viral and it would have to run its course. The second ER doctor said he knew exactly what it was and took xrays which revealed a blocked large intestine. He prescribed Miralax to be taken every hour on the hour that she was awake for a week or two (I can t remember for sure). However, she is now taking Miralax (1 capful in 6 to 8 ounces of water or juice) one time a day (usually about 6:00 P.M.). The diarrhea is still happening and stomach is hurting as well as her rectum. I am a very concerned grandmother and please know that I am not trying to undermine by son and daughter-in-law. I m asking for my own information. I have researched Crone s Disease and those symptoms and it could possibly fit her problem. Please advise!

Suggest Treatment For Prolonged Diarrhea With Blood And Mucus In Stools Of A Teenager
Hello, Diarrhea with mucus and blood in stools could be due to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I suggest you to consult a gastroenterologist for clinical assessment, colonoscopy and biopsy of suspected areas in large intestine for diagnosis and thus management. Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
