I am a healthy 110 lb 19 year old female. I have had this shortness of breath since I was about 11 years old. I get it at random times throughout the entire day. I have had an inhaler since about 12 years old, because the doctor said i had asthma, but the inhaler never really worked for me. I went to the doctor about 3 months ago and he said it was anxiety/panic attacks. I know it can't be a panic attack, because I don't get any other symptoms of anxiety, besides for beign paranoid when i get the shortness of breathe. It feels like I can't ever get a full breath. Another thing you might need to know, I was born premature at 5 lbs. I was on a breathing monitor for a few months after birth, because I'd stop breathing in the middle of the night. I've had breathing issues my whole life. Please help me figure out what this can be.
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. In my opinion, you should first get done PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) to rule out lung diseases. If PFT is normal then no need to worry for asthma or other lung problems. Stress, anxiety and panic disorder can cause isolated breathing difficulty without other symptoms. So better to consult psychiatrist and get done counselling sessions. Try to identify stressor in your life and start working on its solution. You may need anxiolytic drugs (propranolol and flunarizine combination) too. Don't worry, you will be alright with all these. Avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
