Suggest Treatment For Rashes On Feet And Ankles

My healthy 11 yr old daughter broke out in a small rash on both feet and ankles Aug 21st. I returned home from out of town on Aug 22nd and there were maybe a total 20-30 small red dots/rash on both feet and ankles. She had been at the soccer field watching a game on Thursday evening in shorts and chucks that cover her ankles. She did have one mosquito bite in the middle of it that she scratched. She had received Benadryl and Neosporin (I don t know why they gave her this) and Cortizone. A few spots were added during the week. Friday Aug 28th she wore shorts to school and the coloring was a little faded on all spots but all were still there. She switched into loose leggings for dinner and movie. afterwards there were alot more spots up to knee and the new ones were larger and dark purple. No new ones until Monday Aug 31 she came home from school and there were more spots on lower legs and around waist band and belly button. I took her to see a Nurse Practioner who couldn t tell me for sure what it was caused by but thought she had touched something and the areas she touched on her skin are the infected areas. She put her on Steroid pills and topical and said it would not spread but the spots may take up to a month to go away. Monday Aug 31 she took warm Epsom Salt bath and all spots were swollen. Spots seemed to be about the same until Thursday Sept 3 she came home from school more spots on lower leg and more spots around waist. She now has it spreading up outside of both thighs and there was a few above her bra line on back. This morning Fri Sept 4th there were more on her back and thighs. She is contiuning the steroids and cream. Suggested to see Dermatologist. They were closed last night when I got # and will not reopen until Tues to even be able to make appt. They do not itch but are spreading and she did say it tingled a little on Monday Aug 31st. No notable bites except the one mosquito bite.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the extensive rashes indicate combined viral (primary) and bacterial (secondary) infection most likely. My guidelines till you consult her dermatologist:
- Tub bath with lukewarm water added lavender oil with epsom salt
- Maintain her hydration with plenty of liquids
- Prefer loose, clean, cotton clothes
- Avoid exposure to high intensity sunlight
- Prescription of antibiotics such as amoxicillin with clavulanic acid
- Antihistamine as Diphenhydramine
- Continue oral steroids
- Supportive multi vitamins, minerals with zinc
- Local application of calamine lotion

Keep updating of progress and regress of the lesions as per your need.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
