Suggest Treatment For Rashes On The Buttocks In An Elderly Person

Hi, my 87 yr old mother had a rash that started on her buttock, and it had spread throughout her body. The skin started peeling in sheets and skin looks burnt, also it is very itchy. Still doctors are confused. Looking for advice from other sources. What can it be?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You seem to have developed a fungal infection of the groin region, which can be either tinea infection or candidiasis.

You should try to keep the groin region clean and dry. Do not apply any kind of oils or moisturizing creams over the groin region. Wear cotton undergarments in order to reduce sweating.

You need to use an antifungal agent like Clotrimazole gel over the affected area twice a day. Also, you might need to take oral antifungals like fluconazole. And to relieve the itching, take oral antihistamines.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
