Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved husband's illness.
TB is a chronic disease, for treatment of which a combination of various antibiotics are used in the form of either self administered short course
chemotherapy or directly observed treatment- DOT (under the supervision of a health care provider) for a particular duration of time.
Since the offending bacteria are resistant to inj
streptomycin, so this drug will not be effective hence another alternate drug like
Ethambutol can be taken.
The reason of recurrent infection could be either inadequate treatment or non compliance to the prescribed medications.
Given when compliance is doubtful DOT is the best way to eradicate the infection.
Following drugs are found to be effective and hence given under the supervision of the health care provider like doctor or nurse to improve the compliance and hence the success rate.
Isoniazid,
Rifampicin,
Pyrazinamide & Ethambutol are given 3 times a week for first 2 months
Followed by Isoniazid & Rifampicin 3 times a week for 4 months
Vitamin
Pyridoxine is supplemented to prevent the side effect of Isoniazide.
Besides he is encourage to take a high protein diet (meat, fish, poultry, milk) along with fruits and vegetables.
Hope to have answered your query.
Wishing your husband a quick recovery.
