Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi My daughter is 4.5 years old. She developed a cough last night and has a clear runny nose. I looked in her mouth to see if her throat was red (as I have done many times before as she has a chronic asthma cough). I saw in there what i assume to be her epiglottis, which i have never ever seen before. Her tonsils are also slightly enlarged. Also after wiping her nose, the clear mucous has dried a highlighter green colour on the tissue. She has a slight temperature but is otherwise fine. She is slightly lethargic but still able to play as she normally would.
Hello. Thank you for your question. These are common symptoms in this age range. Most upper respiratory tract infections require no treatment. Fluids to avoid dehydration and a cool mist vaporizer in the room are all that is needed, especially in a child whose activity has not changed. However, considering the the swollen tonsils, it is a good idea to consult with your doctor. The tonsils may indicate a bacterial infection, in which case she might need antibiotics.
