Suggest Treatment For Restless Legs Post Hip Surgery

My arthritic lower back gives me restless legs through the nite and also when I want to sit and read, or riding in the car. It comes sporadically and is relieved when I stretch my back muscles or just get up and walk around for 10 or 15 Min. I m 72 and had total hip surgery 2 months ago and have had great success from the bone on bone pain that was bothering me for about 6 months. Now my restless legs problem has returned. What would you suggest for a non narcotic treatment?

Hi,

Restless leg syndrome has no known confirmed etiology (cause) however it is seen in cases of anemia, pregnancy and also in conditions like hypothyroidism, parkinsonism, kidney disease and rheumatoid arthritis. There are few medications and lack of exercise are known to trigger the condition.

I would advise you to first get anemia and other conditions ruled out. Your back would not be the cause for it. You need to do regular exercise and adopt a good sleeping habits, quit smoking if you are a smoker. If found anemic, you would be required to take medications for that. In advanced cases you may need to take medications to balance dopamine levels which are seen low in patients with restless leg syndrome.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
