Suggest Treatment For Rheumatic Fever

Hello ... I am an ALS patient and have been prescribed Mexitil 150 MG BID I had Rheumatic Fever as a child and a heart murmur. My question is ... what else is this medication used for considering as an adult, the only heart problem I have noted is a slight valve backflush. How does this help with the ALS? Sorry ... please disregard. I did not know I had to pay for a response. Sorry for taking up your time ...

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Mexitil is an oral anti-arrhythmic drug that mean to say that it would control the heart rate and avoid any abnormal rhythm of heart. Abnormal rhythm may occur with valvular diseases of the heart and may be serious. So these drugs are used to avoid such thing to happen.

So, this is for your heart and not Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This does not work any how for ALS. Unfortunately, no drug has been proven to be very effective for ALS.

Hope I have answered your query.
