Suggest Treatment For Rib Pain While Coughing Post Injury
Hi, I had a fall down some outside stair s almost 2 weeks ago and feel like i have bruised or fractured my ribs on my right side. My side crashed into some metal railings as I fell so I think this is what has caused the problem. I have a lot of pain in my rib area and find it difficult to cough/sneeze/laugh/bend down and lie down. One thing I am concerned about is that I have no bruising. Please can you tell me what you think may be wrong ? Many thanks for your time and advice. Ros

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi,
The fall you describe can cause injury to underlying rib...causing painful chest movements.
You need x-ray chest done to pinpoint the site & type of injury followed by suitable treatment (fixing chest wall by using adhesive plaster to minimise movements/surgical fixing if needful) along with pain medicine & calcium, vitamin D supplement as advised by an orthopedic surgeon. Till then take rest, an oil massage of the part, take Ibuprofen for pain relief.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale,
