Suggest Treatment For Scab Formation After Nail Removal

I had my big toe nail removed 17 days ago. A scab has formed and there is no drainage or puss. I m no longer soaking the toe as of day 10. I stopped swimming when it was removed and really need to get back to the pool. Does the scab need to come off or is it ok to get back into the pool now? I don t want to risk an infection but need to get back to my swimming routine.

Hello,

You have developed a scab after nail removal. A scab is a tissue covering that forms on the skin to protect a fresh wound. Scabs are part of the wound healing process, these cells stop the bleeding at the break in the skin. When these cells are exposed to oxygen, they dry up to protect the wound’s fragile tissue while healing. You should care for the scabs so that the wound heals properly and scars appear less noticeable.

Keep the scab clean, to prevent itchiness and scarring, keep the scabs moist with aloe vera gel or lacto calamine lotion, use bandages to cover fresh scabs to ensures that trauma does not trigger bleeding or swelling. Avoid getting into swimming pools, avoid playing sports. Engaging in physical activity may harm wounds or scabs if they are not protected.

If scabs are not taken care of they may cause scarring, secondary bacterial infection and spread of infection. To help the scabs heal faster control your blood glucose level at all cost, take zinc supplements.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
