Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have dandruff problem since 2010. I have tried almost all types of treatment but none of them worked at all. The dandruff on scalp is not visible. Whenever I scratch my scalp because of itching then it comes out with little blood on the scalp. Because of this I am loosing my hair. Every time I scratch my scalp I get some hair on my hands/fingers. I have read on the internet and come to one conclusion that this problem is called seborrhoeic dermatitis. Do you have any permanent solution for this?
Hello, greetings! U seem to be suffering from a skin condition called seborrheic dermatitis. This is caused by a yeast Malassezia which mainly affects the sweat glands. There can be various manifestations such as red or yellow flaky scales, or even small pimple like lesions. Stress tends to aggravate this condition. I would recommend my patients an over the counter antifungal treatment such as ketoconazole shampoo. Further aggravation of this treatment may need to be treated with steroids and itching can be controlled with a class of drugs called antihistamines. A course of 3-6 months antifungal treatment maybe needed for a permanent solution, results again depending on factors such as stress or heredity.
