Suggest Treatment For Severe Abdominal Upset In An Elderly Person
I am a 56 year old male. I have been having stomach issues since last Saturday. I am able to have a normal bowel movement in the morning.Usually 2-3 of them within a couple of hours of waking. Problem is it still feels as though I have to go but nothing or not much comes out. Pain is in the middle to left side about even with the belt line. Exercise today seemed to actually help it. FYI I have had 4 colonoscopies thus far due to colon cancer by my dad. I always have a few polyps and Diverticulosis.
The pain typical to constipation tends to occur on the left side of the abdomen where you are describing. With a history of regular colonoscopy, any dangerous lesions are highly unlikely.
The change in bowel habits may be related to any changes in fluid or fiber intake. As you inferred, activity is recommended to help with bowel movements.
If there is no change with increased activity, increase your fiber and fluid intake. A fiber supplement such as benefiber or metamucil can help with fiber intake. If there is associated pain along with the bowel changes, you should be seen.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
