Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain

I am on oxycodone and diazepam. I have been on this combination for years due to sever (disabling) back pain. Now my doctor wants to take me off of diazepam. Unfortunitly I can not find a muscle relaxant that works anywhere near as good as diazepam. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Noted your history about chronic back pain that is debilitating and controlled with Oxycodone and Diazepam, you have found out that Diazepam works the best for you as muscle relaxant but the Doctor wants to stop it.
Indeed yes, Diazepam in a low dose works the better than other muscle relaxants and quietens the mind too well.
Oxycodone simply works as a painkiller but helps in to stop the vicious cycle of pain - spasm - pain.
You can see the results of stopping Diazepam and tell the Doctor if it helps to stop or increase the disability and if so your Doctor can start Diazepam.
Since you have mentioned that the back pain is too much and you have not mentioned about the cause and investigations I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical examination and investigations like MRI to know the exact cause and thus go for a definitive diagnosis and management as per the cause found.
There are other treatment modalities that help as per the cause.
Local Rubefacient liniments, physiotherapy, steroid injections and so on.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
