Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain

I ve been suffering from back pain for about a month now. I have been to get a massage, twice to a chiropractor, once to Convenient MD, twice to an urgent care center and once to my primary care physician. I received a prescription from Convenient MD which did not help my back pain at al. I thought that originally my chair at work was bothering me and then I thought I lifted something too heavy - so I ve been trying over the past month to work through this. At the Urgent Care center they were very good, prescribed medication and they ended up the next day changing the dosage because none of the medication they gave me helped. I m still in pain and the medication has made me constipated - which I ve been working through with Epson salt, water and lemon juice - but nothing takes away the pain at all. I m not a hypochondriac - I m wondering if my back pain is associated with Irritable Bowl syndrome? I do have physical therapy scheduled for the 26th of July. I can t really sleep that well - laying down is very uncomfortable, sitting is very uncomfortable. I pace a lot. I can t really go to the bathroom at this point without taking the Epsom salt, water and lemon juice. I m so bloated I look like I am 8 months pregnant. Once the Epsom salt mixture kicks in - I feel much better. I have no idea what to do at this point. I did get a back brace to help me sit at work to help relieve some of my stress. Any advice? I do have a degenerative L5 or L3 but it hasn t seemed to bother me in the past years. I do have stress from my job.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Your last doctor has led you on the right track and has done the right thing by getting the X-ray of the cervical spine done. I have gone through the plates and indeed some amount of cervical spondylosis is present. You need to do static neck exercises (Google out for the techniques).

Ultrasonotherapy (available with physical therapists) should provide relief. Depending upon the response, you might also need spinal traction. Use of hot compress on the back should provide relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
