Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation In A Child

My 8year old is taking half a 25mg capsule of anafranil at bedtime. She seems to be a little constipated. Being that she has autism we have dealt with constipation for years. We are finally in a good spot with her bowels. The anafranil has helped stop her tantrums but today she seems very frustrated....sitting on the toilet and not able to have a normal bm. Is this very common on this drug? I give her a full cap of miralax and 6mls of senecot every day. Do you have any other suggestions for me. She has been taking the anafranil for 2 and 1/2 weeks.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You may continue with the medication as prescribed by your consulting doctor. However I would suggest few modifications in the diet. Add plenty of fruits and vegetables to her diet, especially banana as and apples that are rich in dietary fibres. Avoid processed food like pasta and white breads.

Also motivate her to indulge in physical activity like playing in the park or cycling. Drinking warm water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach will also help relieve constipation. You may add lemon and honey to warm water to add flavor so that your little girl consumes it easily. See to it that she consumes enough water throughout the day.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepti Shivakumar
