Suggest Treatment For Severe Constipation

Hi, My daughter has issues with constipation on a regular basis. She has been facing this issue since the day she was born and she is now 3. We have had several discussions with her doctor about the issue as well as tried many different treatment options, which only work for the time being. She currently has to have maryalax like every other day to get her going and then its like BAM shes constipated again. When she was a little younger she was sent to be checked for pyloric stonosis, which the results came back negative. I am at loss here. She is miserable and when she tries to go she strains and grunts so hard that her whole face turns red; I am terrified she is going to do more damage. Her tummy becomes so bloated and refuses to potty train because of it. Her doctor believes that it is due to her horrible eating habits, but I am afraid that it is something much more. She is a very picky eater and she really wont eat anything healthy for her. So my questions is, What could be causing her to suffer with this chronic constipation? Could it be an underlying medical condition or am I over reacting?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you are having symptoms of severe constipation which could be due to many reasons such as due to decreased gastric motility, inadequate intake of fluids and fiber rich diet, eating a lot of dairy products, irritable bowel syndrome, some medications like antidepressants, acidity and certain conditions like hypothyroidism. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination. Doctor may order colonoscopy or other tests to look for blockages in your colon , barium studies and blood test for hormonal changes. The first thing that you should do is to start taking a high fibre diet and drink plenty of water..
-You can also drink warm water especially in morning.
-Add yoghurt in diet as it is a probiotic.
-You should also do moderate workout daily and also take walk after meals.
-The physician can also advise you to take stool softeners like Docusate.
-You can also take fibre supplement like Pysllium or Lactulose.
-You can also be advised Prescription drugs like Lubiprostone and Linclotide..

Hope your concern has been resolved.
