Hello.
I can understand your concern as any kind of
infection during pregnancy can be alarming. However, you need not worry, most of the times it is viral infection which is self-limiting and does not cause any harm to the pregnancy.
Most of the common medicines available in the form of cough syrup eg.
chlorpheniramine,
dextromethorphan, guafenisin,
phenylephrine,
pseudoephedrine, etc. come under the pregnancy category C i.e. use with caution.
Cetirizine is the only drug which is relatively safe. Hence you can continue taking it for 3-4 more days. However, limit the use of cough syrups and use only when cough is very severe. For fever you can take
paracetamol upto 2000mg per day safely. Viral infections are generally self limiting and donot last for more than 7-10 days.
You have not mentioned whether the cough is dry or wet. If it is dry, steam inhalation works best as it induces local factors which fight against the infection and it has no side effects. I generally recommend steam inhalation three times a day.
However, if the cough is wet and you have a yellowish/ greenish/ blackish or blood tinged sputum/ it indicates more serious infection and may need antibiotics or even hospitalisation. Hence in that case you need to visit your physician or gynaecologist.
Hope this helps.
