Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough And Heart Palpitations When Diagnosed With Bronchitis

4 Weeks ago I experienced a bad cough. I went to the ER and was told it was bronchitis. They gave me a breathing treatment and they prescribed me 800 Motrin and an inhaler. The same week the symptoms got worse which included an ear infection and I went back to the ER and they told me it was just an ear infection so they gave me some antibiotics. A couple of days later I followed up with my Primary Doctor and he checked my ears and said everything look good. Well a couple of days later my symptoms got worse. I was coughing uncontrollably and breathing was short so I went back to the ER and told them I was experiencing shortness of breath. I told them about the bronchitis but the Dr. said well did they tell you the cough could last 4-6 weeks but I knew I felt worse. They did a CT and discovered I had mild pneumonia in my right lung. They gave me antibiotics and told me to rest 2-3 days. I followed up my Primary Doctor and he said I should be fine and just the cough would last. Today I m still coughing but having notice that I feel what I believe is a vibration and or a rattle feeling....It could even called I guess fluttering...but then I don t know what to call it but it comes and goes throughout the day. It doesn t hurt but I am afraid that it is leading to something else or if the pneumonia is still there. I called an advice nurse and she said to go to my Primary doctor or my OB Gyn... Do you have any advice? Sincerely, Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Indeed, coughing might persist for a few weeks after severe bronchitis / pneumonia. What we usually recommend is to ease the coughing as following:
- Aerosol therapy twice daily
- Keep your bedroom well humidified
- Take anti-histaminic
- Increase fluids intake
- Apply cold balm at bedtime at night
- Take cough syrup
When you have the episode of the coughing (like spasm), I usually recommend my patients to put a mask on the face especially at night in order the warmth of breathing will serve to ease the cough.

Keep following up with your primary doctor, he knows all your personal history. If unusual symptom, or complication, he might direct to appropriate specialist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. All the best.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
