Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough In A Teenager

My 17 year old son has had a cough for several days with tightness. We gave him OTc cold medicine and he used his nebulizer. Now he is breathing more freely but looks to have almost a prickly heat type rash all over his torso and spreading down his extremities. He had this type of rash when he was 7 and had frequent bouts of strep. His throat looks fine. What do you think? The rash was isolated to his stomach earlier today but has spread. He was in 100 degree heat in a heavy band uniform on Saturday.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe cough which seems to be due to respiratory infection and heat rash which you are getting is a common skin condition in which hair follicles become inflamed and due to side effect of medications as well.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to keep that area dry and wear loose clothes. You should apply a warm, moist washcloth or compress and apply soothing lotions. You should gently wash the infected skin twice a day with antibacterial soap. Take diet rich in fluids. Consult dermatologist for proper examination. The doctor may prescribe antibacterial or antifungal medicine along with immunosuppressants.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
