Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough In An Elderly Person

Please can you assist, my mom is 79 years old and has developed a nasty cough, every now and again she will bring up phlegm. She has had a CT scan done as well as a bronchoscopy, she doesn t have cancer thanks goodness. We are waiting for the other results for TB to come thru or the specialist said she should have an acute viral infection. No medication has been subscribed and the cough is getting worse. Can she take Celestamine to help, I also have Septoguard will that help her in the meantime. Many thanks G

Hello,

If a cough is severe with flu-like symptoms then she can take cephalosporins e.g Cefixime twice a day for 5 days.

2. If phlegm is also present then steam inhalations is a must.

3. Paracetamol for fever

4. Rest

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
