Hi, thanks for your question.
Cough that gets worse when you lay down is likely from
acid reflux or
bronchitis. In case of acid reflux, you would also have a central
chest pain which is also worse at night. If this occurs, you should take over-the-counter antacids and
proton pump inhibitors such as
nexium, and the cough would subside with time.
If the above symptom of acid reflux is absent, bronchitis and
laryngitis are the most likely causes. To treat this condition, here are some tips.
1. Steam inhalation: Perform this by putting your face over steam of warm water in a bath and inhale the steam. This keeps the lining of the nose and throat warm and moist, reducing the inflammation, thereby, reducing your symptoms.
2. Stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water, up to two litres daily. This also makes the lining of the nose and throat moist.
3. Avoid pollutants of the airway such as cigarrate smoke, exhaust fumes, dust, and insecticide sprays. If you are inevitably around these, use a face mask.
4. If your symltoms come with a fever, you may need an antibiotic. Most of my patients with infective laryngitis are given
Augmentin.
I wish you good health.
