Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough With Thick Phlegm

I am suffering from a cough that is producing a very thick mucus that is discolored and looks infected. My chest feels like something is sitting on it. I have doxycycline hyclate 100 MG cap to take. Also, my head is full of stuff. Wil it help me until I can go to the doctor?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of severe cough with thick phlegm. Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to many reasons , but in your case in seems to me that the symptoms are due to untreated upper respiratory tract infection . When it left untreated and specially in case of low immunity the infection spread to surroundings like larynx , ear through eustachian tube or to lungs. Need not to worry. Apply mist humidifiers in room. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor may order certain test like throat swab test , viral culture test, CT scan and X-ray of upper respiratory tract . Doctor may prescribe antibiotic amoxicillin or penicillin at least along with decongestant , expectorant and anti histamine . For now do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day . Doctor may also refer you to chest specialist .
