Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My fiance is 41 years old (male) and has had a lump that feels like a bone about mid way down his left side at the edge of the rib. He was told a year and a half ago he had a few spots on his left lung but never got it check out so he is now very concerned. It hurts when he touches it. He will be getting it checked out but could it just be cartilage inflammation? I feel he has convinced himself he waited to long to go to a doctor and he believes its cancer. From what I understand , cancer lumps are not hard and feel like the tip of a hard bone. He has had a bad cough and I wonder if he could have inverted or flipped part of his rib. Could it be possible?
This would more likely to be a muscular swelling, or possibly skin infection causing swelling, or even inflammation of the cartilage between the ribs caused by the coughing.
Any kind of cancer would not typically present like this, so I would consider that to be very unlikely, however, it is a good idea for him to see a doctor to make sure what this is and get him started on the right treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,

Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough
Hi, Inversion or flipping of the rib would not occur and would not be a possible cause of the lesion. Cancer is the lest common reason for lumps and bumps though it is the one that persons would very naturally worry about first. It is possible that the lump is due to inflammation and he should try to have it assessed. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
