Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I leaned over a center console in a car a few days ago and the edge it went between my ribs, I slumped down at the same time and felt an jolt of injury to that area now it feels bruised it a little -- hurts slightly when I cough, or move in certain ways (I don t think it s anything more serious, I can walk to work and sit all day) It seemed to get better but then a day after that it went back to not feeling good. I did have a few cigarettes the night before, do you think that s why it hurts again, or maybe I slept on it wrong. I just to make sure if I have a bruised rib and smoke this weekend that I won t potential damage my lungs more or cause an infection or pneumonia, thanks!
Hi, Its nothing to worry about. Looks like you have an injury on your intercostal muscles (muscles in between ribs) which causes spasm of these muscles and thus causes pain. Usually takes a week or two for the pain to subside, maintain posture while sitting and sleeping avoid over straining and also avoid running and give rest to that area. Most probably because you slept on it the pain reappeared, it has nothing to do with smoking so no need to be worried but you will always be at risk of respiratory infections when you smoke so i advise you to quit the habit. Thank you for referring to this forum. Regards.
