Suggest Treatment For Severe Cramping In An Elderly Person
My 84 year old mother is on her 3rd day of a 15ml lactulose per her prescription. She is still not able to re-leave herself. She is experiencing severe cramping. Would administering the lactulose rectally possibly free her up? If so how do we do it? Would the dose change?
Hi, I understand your concern. It is not recommended to use laxatives like lactulose in a patient who is having abdominal cramps with bowel not opened. Especially in elderly. You need to exclude possibility of intestinal obstruction. Please take your mother to a nearest hospital, so that they will prescribe something like morphine for pain and will investigate further. Hope this answer was useful. Thank you.
