Suggest Treatment For Severe Cramps On Arms, Shoulder And Ribs
I have severe cramps (arms, shoulder, rib, legs) after heavy outdoor work in the heat. I was working outside for about 3 hrs...drank plenty of water and 2 bottles of Gatoraide. I have been cramping for about 3 hours now...after a shower and cool down at home in AC.
Assuming a sweat rate of up to 1 litre per hour which can be possible in the heat, one would need to replace 1 litre at least per hour. However, the actual sweat rate can be higher and even up to 2 litres per hour.
This needs to be replaced with electrolytes. Gatorade is a good electrolyte replace but having at least 1 to 1.5 litre per hour would be useful.
Another thing that can be useful is to do a sweat hydration test. This can be done by checking the weight before a 1 hour workout. Post workout, measure the water intake.
The sweat rate in 1 hour would be the weight loss and the water intake. So, if one loses 1 kg of weight and drinks 1 litre of water and then the sweat rate would be 2 litres per hour. Then, one would have to drink water and electrolyte at this rate.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Vignan Rachabattuni
