Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea, Chest Pain And Swimmer S Ear

I went to Mexico with 3 friends. I was on antibiotics. They were not. I was not affected. They had severe diarrhea, no fever, larthargic, irritable, stomache pains, muscle pains. I gave my boyfriend, the heaviest, probiotics right away and he seemed better within 24 hours. The other 2 were sick for a few days. The tiniest, my best friend, is still experiencing diarrhea and now is complaining of chest pain. I was the only one that didn t get sick. Could this a bacterial infection that s moved to her lungs. We were swimming and she was complaining of swimmers ear at one point. Also, would Cephanllexin help her?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what your friends had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, it's possible to get both lung and diarrhoea symptoms in few infections like legionella or mycoplasma.

However, if the pain is severe its better to get a chest x-ray and ultrasound abdomen done. Using antibiotics may be needed and ciprofloxacin can be better choice. Oral rehydration salts may be continued.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
