Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I been have ear pain on and off for about 5 years. I would notice it happens after washing my hair. The pain would only affect one ear at a time. It start in the inner part my ear then to the side of my face, head, and gums. If the air hits the inner part of my ear I can feel discomfort radiate from the ear to the head to my neck to my arm and sometime my whole body. But in the last year it s only been affecting my left ear and side of face ,head and gum and it not happening when I wash my hair anymore.
Your symptoms of pain in ear referring to the face is classical of a condition called trigeminal neuralgia. I would advise you to consult an ENT Surgeon first to get a detailed examination of ENT, ask for any possibility of vascular loop around trigeminal nerve, any other cause in external ear canal as an instigating or trigger factor. Second opinion of a Neurologist for further evaluation and coordination with an ENT Surgeon. MRI of ears, brain and particularly of Trigeminal nerve. Watch for other reasons like viral infection in past. Hypertension. Stress and anxiety levels. All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and further symptomatic and specific management.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
