General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The treatment of Gaint-Cell Arteritis involves the use of high dose steroids like Prednisone.

The dose ranges from 40 mg to 60 mg for a month daily and the response to treatment is a dramatic improvement in symptoms like a vision in most cases.

Once the remission is achieved the dose of steroids is reduced to a maintenance dose of 5 mg to 10 mg daily.

If you experience severe headaches, or visual disturbance despite the use of high dose steroids for a month; you may need to discuss with your doctor a suitable alternative treatment.

The other options available apart from steroids is the use of immune modulator drugs like Tocilizumab. However, this medication can be given only by intravenous, or as a subcutaneous injection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
