Suggest Treatment For Severe Hip And Back Pain Post An Accident

My 14 year old daughter landed on her right leg coming down from a jump serve (volleyball) on June 6 and hasn t been able to lift her right leg or walk/sit without pain since. A lumbar MRI was done June 23 and ruled out spinal stress fracture and fluids all looked good. Would the lumbar MRI have taken pictures of the hip area too? Now that the spasms in her back have settled, pain is localized in her hip. With this injury being nearly a month out, I wonder if she could possibly have a tear of some kind? What else would cause a 14 year old to have a significantly reduced range of motion in one leg and significant pain this far out from the injury? She has been in PT with no progress! Frustrating!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 14 year old daughter having had a jump while playing volleyball, developed pain in right leg, normal spinal MRI, still painful standing and walking after one month, pain localized to hip.
The MRI of lumbar spine most probably does not cover the hip area.
Since the age is 14 it is the best idea to go for the following:
Second opinion of another Orthopedic Surgeon if you have already consulted any Orthopedic Surgeon.
MRI of the affected, painful and tender area.
Tests of blood for the following: CRP, CBC, thyroid functions, Rheumatoid arthritis.
A proper and an actual clinical examination by a Doctor can help a lot to get to know the clinical diagnosis, to get additional investigations done and go for proper management.
There is a possibility of some muscle tear that has gone into fibrosis and thus the painful movements.
Rest helps in good recovery which your daughter might not taken.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
