Suggest Treatment For Severe Neck And Shoulder Pain

20 year old healthy female had some minor soreness in her left (dominant) shoulder blade. She noticed it about 20 minutes before getting into a vehicle. Upon leaning to close the door, a sever and acute neck and shoulder pain began. The pain is essentially gone while lying on her back with a pillow beneath her head. When turning her head up or side to side, the pain returns, limiting her motion. She has taken some NSAIDs to help relieve some pain and is resting in a comfortable position. What else can we do? Heat or ice? Massage? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The pain is likely a result of muscle spasm where movement restriction is observed. It might take couple of days for the pain to go away.

NSAIDS or muscle relaxants help a lot in this. Adequate rest and least movement of the affected part helps. Heat or ice packs application can help a little. Avoid massaging the area. If the pain persists longer for weeks then I advise you to seek medical help.

Hope this helps. Feel free to contact for any further query in the future.
