Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had a pain in the neck for several weeks. It s become so bad I have great difficulty turning my head to the right. I noticed a soft lump about the size of a marble at the base of my skull behind my right ear. I went to my chiropractor who took an Xray but saw nothing unusual. He could feel the lump also. He managed to pop my neck on the left side but even he couldn t force my head to turn more than slightly to the right. I took an advil for the first time in months and later an Aleve. I RARELY take pain medication. I ve tried heat [some comfort] and biofreeze rub but the pain hasn t stopped all day. Any suggestions?
Hello and welcome to HCM, A soft lump at base of skull needs to be subjected to aspiration cytology before any treatment can be planned. Aspiration cytology is an out patient investigation wherein a fine needle is introduced into the welling and cells are aspirated. The aspirated cells are spread on a slide and stained with appropriate stain. The stained cells are examined microscopically to know the nature and character of the swelling. After knowing the nature of the lesion, appropriate management can be planned. You need to consult your primary healthcare provider for clinical assessment, aspiration cytology and thus management.
