Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In Neck

Hi Dr. Rynne, I have been experiencing neck for the past 3weeks and unfortunately the OTC s are not helping. I swim 3-4 times per week but to no avail the pain seems worse . I also go to a massage therapist which seems to help but my insurance will not cover the monthly costs . What can I do for better quality of life for myself?.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The cause for pain in neck needs to be known.
Pain in the neck can be muscular in origin, it can be due to spondylitis, etc.
I suggest you to consult an orthopedician for clinical assessment of the neck.
Clinical assessment will help to determine the probable cause of neck pain.
Muscular pain requires rest and pain killers.
Spondylitis is managed with physiotherapy, relaxing exercises and painkillers.
Immobilization of the neck may be required with the help of a collar.
Movements a those involved in swimming may aggravate the pain avoid any activity or movement which is increasing the neck pain.

Thanks and take care

General & Family Physician Dr. Sonia Raina's  Response
Hello, greetings! Thanks for the query. Neck pain maybe due to a variety of causes. These may include any muscle stiffness due to a wrong posture, cervical spondylosis i.e., constant pressure on spine near your neck. Alternatively it maybe fibromyalgia which is nothing but a muscle and joint pain. Treatment includes maintaining a proper posture, analgesic drugs to relive the pain, muscle relaxant drugs, local application of pain relieving gels. I suggest you go to a local orthopaedician for a physical examination. You may also need to get an X ray done to evaluate the problem further.
