Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Left Shoulder And Chest

I have a severe pain in my left shoulder which travels across my chest and down my arm to my elbow. IT does not hurt if I lift my arm. I find it very difficult to sleep or even lie down, can anyone tell me what this pain is and what I can do about it. Peter

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Peter,
thanks for trusting HCM with your query
from the description you have given, there are many possible causes for your pains; the most severe is an ischemic disease of the heart especially as you say you find it difficult to lie down. Ischemic disease is usually worsen by effort, its a constricting pain and in severe forms is associated with breathlessness. People who are hypertensive or diabetic are most affected.
Another possibility could be from the digestive system and respiratory system, peptic ulcer disease, oesophageal spasm, pleuropneumopathy etc.
So some detail information and questioning will be necessary in a bit to investigate the origin of the pain for appropriate treatment to be given.

Best regards
Dr Achuo
