Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Stomach

I had stomach pain that woke me up in the middle of the night. Last week it happened and I had pain in my stomach and my stomach felt hard. The pain went up into my chest and shoulders as well. I took a tums and within 5 minutes it was all gone. Start to finish it was 15 minutes. Last night it happened again at 2:30am, only to last a full hour. I couldn t sit, stand or lay down - the only relief was on my elbows and knees on the floor. My stomach hurt - it felt hard to the touch and the pain went down through my abdomen, up into my shoulders and into my back. I was hot and sweating only to have the pain finally go away and I felt nauseous (grabbed the halloween candy bucket, dumped out the candy - and the feeling went away) and immediately following I had chills. After that, I was able to lay down and go to sleep. All day, I ve been afraid to eat and I still have stomach discomfort. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.
Although further more info needed to make a clear cut diagnosis. But let's workout some thing with the available history and possible options.
First of all , we think of acid peptic disease (secretion of excessive acid in the stomach leading to ulcer formation) . It is a quite common condition and when you are having the pain , taking an antacid syrup can relieve the symptoms.
Next we take up the option of ischemic heart disease . To support this option we need to know about your age , built and weight. If your BMI is more than 25 and and you are more than 40 years old or having co-existing chronic illness like diabetes mellitus or hypertension or hyperlipidemia. Then this option is highly likely .
Lastly we can discuss a less likely option of pancreatitis. It can also cause similar symptoms but it is less likely for pancreatitis to have symptoms for such a short period of time an go away on its own without any proper medical care.
So to conclude seeing upon your description, i suggest firstly you need to get evaluated for any evidence of cardiac problem. Then if found no issue you may need to visit a surgeon for discussing the option of pancreatitis.
Wishing you best of health.
Regards
