Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Wrists And Thumb

My right thumb is popping out of joint and then when I twist my wrist, it pops back where I can bend it. It started after I started a new inhaler. It is more of a nerve type sudden severe pain. It may be a tendon rather than a joint pain. Please let me know what you think

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

A pain that is on the thumb and it crosses the wrist or goes up to the forearm might be due De Quervain Tendinitis. This is irritation of the tendon that moves the thumb and with thumb movement you can feel popping sounds.

To help with it you can take ibuprofen 600 mg, 6 times a day after food, paracetamol 1000 g every 6 hours (together with ibuprofen), try to restrain movement in the area. Sometimes splints are put to reduce movements there. If these do not help enough then a steroid injection can be done to reduce irritation of the tendon.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
