Suggest Treatment For Severe Redness And Swelling In Leg After Sunburn
My husband got sunburned 5 weeks ago, and still has swelling and a dark red rash on his legs. He was given fluids and steroids at the time of the initial sunburn, and has since seen our doctor again. He prescribed him an antibiotic and some water pills to be used for 2 or 3 days. That was last Thursday, July 2, and now his legs are getting worse again. They are more red, and sowlen.
Patients with extensive blistering sunburn, severe pain, systemic symptoms (for example, fever, headache, vomiting and dehydration) may require hospitalization for fluid replacement and pain control. I recommend your husband blistered areas should be gently cleaned with mild soap and water and covered with sterile dressings. He should get topical anti-microbials or antibiotics (for example, Silver Sulfadiazine or Mupirocin ointment) may use to prevent bacterial super-infection. There is no evidence that oral cortico-steroids are useful in severe sunburn.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General & Family Physician
