Suggest Treatment For Severe Shooting Pain In The Knee And Lower Legs

Good morning, My daughter (age 24, 5 5 about 183 lb) woke up with severe shooting pain that starts in her knee and travels down to her lower leg. It comes in waves and was severe enough to wake her up from a dead sleep. she was crying when she called (she is not a crier and has a fairly high pain tolerance) She does work out but hasn t had any issues. Last workout consisted of tredmill on Monday. shes had a previous knee sprain but that was 4 years ago. Any idea what could be causing this pain?

Hello,

As mentioned about the shooting pain in the knee and leg this directs me towards the neuropathic pain. Due to nerve compression anywhere in its course, there might be a radiation of the pain.

As she had the past history of a knee injury and treadmill workout just recently I can guess this to be a nerve entrapment.

I will advise for doing McKenzie maneuver. If this McKenzie maneuver helps to reduce the radiation of the pain then it will be related to the nerve entrapment.

You can check about McKenzie maneuver online. If it's positive then an MRI is suggested. Post which exercises like - core stability, spinal muscle strengthening exercises, hip muscle strengthening exercises, static Quadriceps, and static hamstring.

In case the McKenzie maneuver is negative then we need to assess the knee joint and take an MRI as it may be a ligament injury too. Based on the type and grade of ligament injury the treatment shall be adviced.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
