Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My friend has been sick over the past several days, probably from a sinus infection. But the worst part, he says; i when he blows his nose he smells and tastes what he would call a Moldy dog smell. What would cause that? and does he need to be on a antibiotic for this?
Based on the history you have shared, it can be acute upper respiratory tract infection and it can cause change of taste and smell temporarily or due to mucous production. It's better to get an otolaryngologist review and get X-ray PNS done. If signs of inflammatory congestion of sinus is present, it may need to be treated with antibiotics like azithromycin or moxifloxacin. Oral anti histamines like cetirizine or loratidine may be helpful along with OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.
Wishing him a speedy recovery. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
