Suggest Treatment For Severe Swelling And Pain In The Elbow

I was just diagnosed with lupus, no rashes. I have terrible joint pain that moves from joint to joint. I have had 2 months of severe elbow pain on the inside, (told it was the ulnar collateral ligament) which is swollen and looks like a chicken egg under my skin. What choices do I have for treatment. I was told cortisone injections are not an option. I am allergic to codeine and Tylenol, which leaves me tramadol 100mg that barely takes the edge off. I have stopped all breads, red meats, and caffeine. any suggestions would be great.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

It is most likely a condition called bursitis which may be caused by trauma or by any other irritation of a cubital bursa, a small fat pad in the elbow. At this point, you should rest with an elbow, apply ice, take nonsteroid painkillers and elevate your arm and put elastic compress. It should lead to symptom improvement within 12 hours. Later, if there is no improvement, it would be advisable to do X-rays and see if fracture exist. Also, hematoma or seroma accumulation may persist and then elbow function and fluid evacuation should be done by doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
