Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Wife is entering advanced Alzheimer s and is in a Geriatric Care center. She just recently started exhibiting some liver imbalance, and when I visited her yesterday; her feet, legs and abdomen were extremely swollen. Is the swelling a sign of some advancing liver failure?
The swelling of the abdomen and legs may be a sign of liver failure. The liver is an important organ that produces proteins and when it fails reduced proteins may cause swelling that is generally spread, as it is happening in the case of your wife. To make sure if the liver is the cause of this, she will need some blood tests especially albumin levels in the blood.
I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
