Severe throat pain and swallowing difficulty when there is no bacterial infection then it can be most probably viral throat infection..
So my suggestion is to consult an Emergency room and get evaluated and a viral culture should be done to confirm the diagnosis..
As the viral infection subsides once it completes its life cycle in human body there fore for now taking supportive treatment will help in relief from the symptoms..
He should take anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen. Such numbing lozenges like Cepacol can help in relieving pain in throat. Do warm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash gargles.. Take soft meals like eggs, noodles, bread etc. Avoid spicy and chilled foods.. A course of antibiotics can be taken to avoid secondary bacterial infection.. Do steam inhalation..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
