Hi Dr Rynne, Am seeing GP for persistent wheezy cough. She has suggested whooping cough - aged 72 I know it is not this. Have tested high for Immunoglobins and given Avamys spray. Not sure this is correct. My immune system has not been working properly for 1 year. Anne
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com. Thanks for consulting.
If this is pertussis (whooping cough) it is best treated with early start of antibiotics. It also prevents spread of infection to others. In whooping cough yes steroids can be used and you are given the steroid spray. You may use that as it may reduce the local inflammation of the respiratory tissues. But there is no use of cough suppressants in whooping cough.
I will suggest you to consult either an Otorhinolaryngologist or a Pulmonologist for better assistance. He will do the required examination and will do some testes if needed. The treatment strategy may be needed to change according to your situation at the time of presentation.
