Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In Knee After An Injury

A month and a half ago i jumped off a machine, didnt jump back far enough and came down on the metal leg hitting my knee and cutting it open. I had an xray n was told it was a bone bruise if i still had pain in a week see an orthopedic doctor. Week later i did that. She never touched my knee only asked me to lift it as far as i could. Which wasnt far. I had alot of swelling, couldnt bear weight, extreme pain and couldnt bend it. Its a month amd a half later and i still have pain and no affirmative diagnosis. I start therapy tomorrow. As of a week ago i went back to orthopedic doc the tendent that runs threw my knee got so tight while in the shower i couldnt straighten it out. After a half hr of massaging my thigh it started to release. Its also making a popping noise depending on how i move. She was able to witness these because they happened again in her office again the day i went to see her. Still diagnosed with a bone bruise and now possible meniscus tear. I dont understand how she can really know anything about what could be wrong if shes never touched me. I though they would move my leg n have me bend it and watch when i walk to get a better understanding as to what if anything could be torn. My knee is numb and sometimes it runs down to my foot. She did say i probably have nerve damage or just a pinched nerve. Correct me if im wrong but damaged n pinched is 2 very different levels of potential problem. So as of today the swelling is gone the pain isnt near as bad. But i still have the burning pain that comes and goes on the inner side of knee, burning on the top of my knee right between were my knee would start and my thigh begins. Stairs up and down still cause some pain but nothing near what it did. When i bend it it feels like something moves along the top of my knee when i try to pull it in all the way. Almost like tendents or something. Hard to explain. Pain really comes and goes alot depending on my activity that day. Still bothers me to use that leg to put pressure on something. For example our riding mowers break. Popping noise more frequent, that shoots a quick sharp pain but fades quickly. I was never given papers of any sort saying ok this is the injury what to expect and what to watch for. So im flying solo here. Any advice or possible diagnosis would be very much appreciated.

Hello,

Following are the most probable causes of your pain in the knee:
1) Fracture patella
2) Meniscal tears
3) Collateral ligaments tears
4) Tendon inflammation like tendonitis
5) Bursitis
6) Joint effusion

You require a detailed clinical examination of knee and then investigations like X-ray and MRI. Kindly meet another orthopedic surgeon for an apt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Until then to reduce your pain, the following are recommended:
1) Pain relief by medications like NSAIDs Ibuprofen and Aceclofenac to be taken twice daily
2) Chymoral AP can be used twice daily. It contains trypsin, chymotrypsin, aceclofenac and paracetamol. It is to be taken twice daily.
3) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg daily once before food is advised.
Kindly consult a competent orthopedic surgeon who can touch your knee and examine thoroughly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
