Suggest Treatment For Shingles In An Elderly Person

My dad, 90 yr old, is acting very dilerious after spending 10 days in hospital due to bad shingles on face and eye, complicated by bacterial infection. He s not himself, not eating, not drinking fluids, and sleeping or hallucinating constantly. I ve fought to get them to not give him any drugs that will contribute to sleepiness. He was in isolation and we had to wear gowns, gloves, masks for the first 9 days. now he is in a posy bed, like a tent, so he can t climb out. Day 2 he got out of bed, tearing out IV, cutting finger (5 stitches) and there was an alarm on his bed that nobody responded to. Coumiden makes him bleed like a stuck pig and I walked in to a blood bath, floor, door, etc. with 5 people getting him back in bed and reattached. Now, when he is awake, he s not himself and is quite nasty and defiant. Besides a UTI, which they are checking today, is there another reason he has changed this drastically? 12 days ago I took him for a haircut, Kroger, and regular annual neurologist appt. 12 days ago he was leaving his assisted living apartment and walking with a walker down to the cafeteria for meals. Getting in and out of bed alone. Sitting and reading newspaper or watching TV.

Hi.
As per your case history of shingles, my treatment advice is -
1. Apply an anesthetic gel like lignocaine gel twice daily on affected skin.
2. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for pain.
3. Take an antihistamine medication like levocetrizine for itching.
4. Other treatment options are oral gabapentin, carabamazepine and amitryptiline taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Thanks.
