I am 54 and very active. I get shingles every 4 or 5 years depending on my stress level (lost both parents 4 years ago and divorce and had a bad episode of shingles) Sometimes I get deep nerve pain in my back and left leg and just 3 or 4 pimples but the pain lingers to where I have trouble walking. I DON T WANT PAIN PILLS I am looking for something for the nerve pain or? I have not received the shingles vaccine . I do an hour of yoga every day and am flexible. What do you suggest?
Hi. As per your case history of shingles, my treatment advice is - 1. Don't squeeze the lesions as it may worsen the condition. 2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily. 3. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for pain. 4. Other treatment options are oral gabapentin, carabamazepine and amitryptiline taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Thanks. Dr. Harshit bhachech. MBBS, DDVL.
